Fault Condition – Bleed Through

A coldwave descent into analog decay and controlled overload.

I am excited to introduce a brand new musical project called Fault Condition. Designed as an outlet for darkwave and coldwave compositions that do not quite fit into the worlds of Plastic Horizon or Before After Again, the project debuts with its first single, Bleed Through. Running at a steady 130 bpm, the track is a purely electronic composition built on stark synthetic textures, heavy low end, and a deep appreciation for the electronic music of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Without lyrics or guitars to guide the narrative, the track relies on repetition, pressure, and tonal shifts to create a cinematic and slightly dystopian atmosphere. The mix sits against the limiter for nearly the entire run time, giving it a dense quality rather than a conventional dynamic build. It evokes the feeling of obsolete technology and corrupted data, mirroring the black floppy disk imagery of the cover art beautifully.

The Architecture of Fault Condition’s Bleed Through

The arrangement is an exercise in austere, mechanical tension. Built from 29 tracks of synthesizers and drum machines, the production features heavily utilized vintage emulations like the Cherry Audio KR55C, Aly James Lab’s VProm, Baby Audio’s BA-1, and U-He’s Diva. The piece maintains a disciplined pulse throughout, with a noticeable breakdown arriving around the 2:13 mark before the signal audibly brightens and degrades into the outro.

At just under four minutes, the track is available to stream and download directly from Bandcamp and Spotify below.

Soft Control by Syntheticult - Cover Art

Syntheticult – Soft Control

A disciplined blend of mechanical precision and human performance.

Jason Whitcomb and Kevin Hartnell return with Syntheticult – Soft Control. Syntheticult is a direct offshoot of both the Before After Again and Sinistrad projects. This latest track combines a steady electronic pulse with a darker, abrasive surface, blending shades of industrial, metal, and synthpop into a heavy, cohesive atmosphere.

Released through Overlook Hotel Records as catalog number R237-129, the arrangement is highly disciplined. Rather than relying on many abrupt changes, it develops patiently through accumulation. The composition opens with a brief electronic build before locking into a sustained groove, gradually increasing its weight and presence until reaching the energy peak of the breakdown, then heading into the outro.

The Architecture of Syntheticult’s Soft Control

The production supports the title entirely. There is a distinct sense of pressure throughout the piece, but it remains controlled. The electronic elements provide a rigid structure while the guitar-driven layers introduce variation and movement. The mix stays perfectly clear even as additional layers are introduced, ensuring neither the mechanical nor the human elements dominate the other.

At just under four minutes, the track is available to stream on Spotify as well as download directly from Bandcamp below.

Fear Not by Before After Again - cover art

Before After Again Fear Not

A tense, 134 bpm descent into cinematic tragedy.

Jason Whitcomb and Kevin Hartnell return with Before After Again Fear Not, the first new single of the year from the project. Running at a driving 134 bpm, the track blends darkwave, post-punk, and synthpop into a tense, cinematic piece built around stark imagery, pulsing movement, and emotional collapse in slow motion.

Released through Overlook Hotel Records as catalog number R237-130, “Fear Not” marks the 23rd overall Before After Again release. It also arrives 110 catalog numbers after the project’s 2020 self-titled debut LP, continuing the shadowed electronic and post-punk thread that has run through the project from the beginning.

Flashing Lights and Slow Motion

The refrain of the song, “Cinematic in slow-mo / Flashing lights as she falls down,” provides the central image of the track. Everything feels suspended in a moment of impact. The lyrics move through brokenness, disconnection, locked hearts, physical vulnerability, and the uneasy knowledge that the future may not offer a rescue.

Visualizing Before After Again Fear Not

The cover art reinforces that exact feeling. The stark black and white portrait, angular slashes, halftone texture, and severe typography create a visual language that feels cold, graphic, and confrontational. It suits the atmosphere of the song: direct, minimal, dramatic, and slightly dangerous.

The track is available to stream and download directly from Bandcamp below. A Spotify embed will be added when available.

Plastic Horizon Summer Never Lasts: A Sunset Synthwave Anthem

Summer Never Lasts by Plastic Horizon - Cover Art

Plastic Horizon: “Summer Never Lasts”

A sunset synthwave track built for late-summer drives and fading light.

The newest Plastic Horizon single, “Summer Never Lasts,” is officially available now. Released via Overlook Hotel Records, this track represents a unique shift in sound, blending the cinematic, retro-futuristic textures of synthwave with the massive, melodic guitar work of classic AOR rock.

Sunset Synthwave Meets AOR

Driven by a steady 120bpm pulse, “Summer Never Lasts” starts by establishing a warm, cinematic atmosphere before building into an emotional, guitar-driven groove. It avoids the frantic velocity of high-speed outrun, opting instead for a reflective, anthemic structure.

True to the Plastic Horizon aesthetic, beneath the bright synths and stadium rock guitars lies a distinct shade of melancholy. The arrangement captures the exact feeling of a season ending, a memory fading, and the bittersweet drive forward. It feels like the last stretch of road before the summer disappears behind you.

If you are a fan of sunset synths, night drives, and melodic guitar solos, this release is for you. You can support the project directly by purchasing the high-quality download from Bandcamp below. Streaming on Spotify and other major platforms will be available in the coming days.

Plastic Horizon Singularity: An Intense 180bpm Metalwave Anthem

Singularity by Plastic Horizon cover art

Plastic Horizon: “Singularity”

A high-speed blend of Outrun and metalwave pushing 180bpm.

Released today, May 26, 2026, the newest track from Plastic Horizon is an absolute adrenaline rush. Titled “Singularity,” this intense composition pushes the boundaries of the genre by blending the neon aesthetics of synthwave and Outrun with the aggressive, driving energy of metalwave.

Maximum Tempo and Density

Pushing the tempo to 180bpm, “Singularity” is an elaborate production built from over 120 individual tracks. This creates a dense, driving atmosphere that refuses to let up from start to finish. Amidst the heavy, fast-paced instrumentation, the arrangement also features a brief but distinct tribute to classic 8-bit video gaming, giving the track a unique retro character that stands out in the mix.

The visual aesthetic matches the chaotic energy of the audio. The cover art depicts twin retro spaceships flying through a neon grid directly into a glowing black hole.

You can stream and download “Singularity” directly from Bandcamp and Spotify, so be sure to add it to your heavy rotation playlists.

Try It: New 70s Library Funk by Cinema Groove Collective

Cinema Groove Collective – Try It

Try It single cover art by Cinema Groove Collective

Out now on Overlook Hotel Records

Cinema Groove Collective has officially released their latest single, Try It. This track is a dedicated homage to the golden era of 1970s library funk, channeling the spirit of grainy film aesthetics, high-speed car chases, and the gritty atmosphere of vintage cop show soundtracks. If you appreciate authentic groove music with a cinematic edge, Try It was made for you.

The Groove and The Low End

The standout feature of this release is undoubtedly the bass work. The track spotlights the remarkable playing of Dutch musician Ralph van der Heijden. His performance is a masterclass in “in-the-pocket” playing, deep, melodic, and driving. From the very first bar, his bass line locks in with the drums to provide a solid, unwavering foundation that allows the rest of the instrumentation to breathe and shine. It is this rhythm section interplay that gives the track its undeniable forward momentum.

What is “Library Funk”?

For those unfamiliar with the term, “Library Music” refers to production music created for film, television, and radio licensing in the 1960s and 70s. Labels like KPM, De Wolfe, and Bruton Music hired top-tier session musicians to record thousands of tracks that ranged from orchestral sweeps to hard-hitting funk.

These records, originally meant for industry use only, became holy grails for hip-hop producers and vinyl collectors decades later. Try It captures the specific “needle-drop” energy of that era, music that feels like it was lifted straight from a dusty reel found in a London archive.

The Analog Production Process

Produced and arranged at Overlook Hotel Records, the recording process for Try It focused heavily on texture and authenticity. To achieve that specific 1975 sound, the production leans into warm, analogue-leaning saturation.

The mix is characterized by tight, dry drums, brassy accents that punch through the mix, and a slight “tape saturation” that adds to the vintage character. By avoiding the pristine, digital sheen of modern pop production, the Cinema Groove Collective ensures that the listener is transported back in time the moment the play button is pressed.

OVERLOOK HOTEL RECORDS TURNS 26

Overlook Hotel Records: 26 Years of Independent Innovation

Overlook Hotel Records: 26 Years of Independent Innovation

⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬⫷ OVERLOOK HOTEL RECORDS ⫸⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬⌬

Founded in August 1999, Overlook Hotel Records began as a personal creative outlet and has since evolved into an independent label and archive, releasing music that is weird, beautiful, experimental, and occasionally rediscovered from the vault.

A Bit of History

The foundation for Overlook Hotel Records was laid in the early 1990s when I was living in Nashville, Tennessee. I owned an Amiga 500 and was using OctaMED to create music modules, inspired by musicians such as Dr. Awesome, Jesper Kyd, and Frédéric “Elmobo” Motte (not to be confused with the American artist Moby). The 8-bit sampling and digital audio editing possibilities were endlessly fascinating to me.

If you would like to read the full background on my electronic music origins, you can find that here: Origin Story.

In late 1993, I moved to Cincinnati, settling into an apartment just a block away from the legendary Sudsy Malone’s and Bogart’s, two essential music venues of the time. By the late 1990s, I owned a Korg Triton and had already begun learning the early versions of Pro Tools.

It was during this period that a friend of mine, Paul, came down from New York City to record a handful of tracks. We released them independently. That effort marked the true beginning of Overlook Hotel Records – and of a lifelong, all-consuming passion for writing and recording music. It eventually led to the construction of a modest home studio, where much of the label’s output has taken shape.

The Creative Drive

Although I have nearly fifty years of experience as a drummer, what I find most fulfilling is the process of songwriting, arranging, and producing. Since childhood, I have been captivated by the mystery of music – its construction, its origin, and the people behind it. I spent countless hours singing or drumming along to records, trying to replicate what I heard using the instruments I had on hand. That natural curiosity evolved into creating my own interpretations, variations, and eventually, entirely original compositions.

It was only once I began focusing on becoming a multi-instrumentalist that everything truly expanded. Rhythm and grooves have always come naturally – but melody is where the real magic unfolds for me.

Remembering the People

I have had the privilege of working with many musicians over the years, some of whom were extraordinarily talented. A few are no longer with us. One of them was a best friend from high school – an astonishing guitarist with a surreal sense of humor, ambition, and vision. His eccentricities gave the impression he came from another planet, which I absolutely loved. He had moved to California to find his place in the music scene and had asked me to move there as well. At the time, I was still living in a small town, holding on to a short-sighted viewpoint of things. Tragically, he died in a car accident just before his twenty-first birthday.

It was because of him that I first picked up the guitar. That moment eventually led to buying my own Fender Stratocaster, then keyboards, bass, and so on. His influence continues to echo in some capacity  through nearly everything I create.

Now, decades later, I have worked on thousands of recordings and continue to make it a part of my daily life.

Plastic Horizon: “In the Mist” – Hauntology & Synthwave Single

Plastic Horizon - In the Mist cover art

Plastic Horizon: “In the Mist”

Overlook Hotel Records presents “In the Mist,” a new single from Plastic Horizon blending Hauntology and Synthwave.

Surprise! Back to back new release days! “In the Mist” is a new single from Plastic Horizon (Catalog R237-087), released July 5, 2024.

This track serves as a sonic exploration of the “Public Broadcast” soundset for the TAL-Pha synthesizer by Oblivion Sound Lab. It was originally created to demonstrate the analog character of these patches, which celebrate the nostalgic electronic sounds of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The Sound of “In the Mist”

Finding inspiration in vintage library music, VHS idents, and synth-heavy television scores, “In the Mist” channels the same dusty aesthetic popularized by artists like Boards of Canada, Pye Corner Audio, and HOME. It is a trip back in time to the heyday of analog synthesis.

Solitude: New Atmospheric Darkwave from Before After Again

Before After Again - Solitude cover art

It’s New Release Day here at Overlook Hotel Records! We are proud to present “Solitude,” the latest darkwave track from Before After Again.

An Atmosphere of Isolation

This isn’t just a song; it’s an atmosphere. “Solitude” captures the suffocating feeling of being trapped within one’s own mind, where the silence is loud and the walls are closing in. With driving synth lines and melancholic vocals, the track explores the tension between wanting to escape the “twisted mind” and finding comfort in the isolation.

Lyrics

Ten years of solitude
I’ve spent my time with you
Watch as these walls all fall down

Don’t know if I can be
Alone inside my empty mind
The time unfolds

Don’t notice this silence for long
Can’t escape I’ve nowhere to run
Suffering inside I brings me down

Don’t worry it comes and it goes
Hidden deep so nobody knows
I’ll keep you safely inside

Confine my every move
Clenched hands but let me go too soon
The grip won’t do

I’m running out of time
You’re always right in back of my
Twisted mind

Perfect for late-night listening in the dark, alone, or in the basement of an abandoned building, “Solitude” is available now on all major streaming platforms. You can support the artist directly by purchasing the track on Bandcamp or streaming it on Spotify using the players below.

Winds of March: New Cinematic Synthwave from Plastic Horizon

Cover art for Winds of March by Plastic Horizon

Plastic Horizon returns to Overlook Hotel Records with “Winds of March,” a track that bridges the gap between atmospheric soundscapes and driving synth-rock energy.

A Cinematic Slow Burn

Drawing heavily from the visual language of Blade Runner and the nostalgic adrenaline of the Outrun aesthetic, this single is a study in tension and release. It does not rush; instead, it invites the listener into a dark, cinematic space.

The track begins with a “dark and easy” introduction, a slow burn of brooding pads and distant melodies that evoke the feeling of a solitary walk through a rain-slicked futuristic city. But as the “winds” pick up, so does the intensity. The composition patiently layers its elements, building a wall of sound that eventually breaks into a full-throttle synthwave rock anthem.

Listen & Support

This dynamic shift makes “Winds of March” the perfect companion for a late-night drive. It captures that specific moment when the empty road stretches out before you, the city lights blur into streaks of neon, and the only option is to turn the volume up and drive.

“Winds of March” is available now on all major streaming platforms. You can support the artist directly by purchasing the track on Bandcamp or streaming it on Spotify using the players below.
