The Sounds of Nightmares 9: what this volume covers

This release showcases the series’ ability to jump between sub-genres. “Blood Drive” required a driving, rhythmic score to match a sinister urban underworld. “Hollow Born” shifts to a gothic, classical texture suited for 19th-century survival horror. Finally, “October Gods” delivers pure seasonal folk horror with a hint of Burtonesque vibes, capturing the wrath of an entity lurking in a pumpkin patch.

Below, you can play the episodes directly on the page. If you prefer to jump straight to listening to the scores, use the Spotify and Bandcamp embeds at the bottom. Bandcamp is also the best option if you want to support the work directly.

Blood Drive

In the midst of a crime infested city, a lone uber driver’s late-night fare takes a terrifying turn when her passenger leads them to a dance club pulsing with sinister secrets.

Hollow Born

On the haunted moors of 19th century England, blood and legacy awaken something buried and long forgotten beneath the dreaded House of Whitmore.

October Gods

A rebellious teen defies the rigid rules of a small town’s mysterious pumpkin patch, unleashing a wrathful entity.

About the Story

One Red Arrow, Part I is a supernatural thriller that blends small town mystery with an unsettling force that hides in the woods. It follows Kay McQuinn as she returns to Owlsbourne, a town reshaped by the reach of BlackHole Pharmaceuticals. A strange encounter grants her an otherworldly gift, and with the help of Nick Knight she begins to unpick old legends, buried secrets, and a truth that is far darker than expected.

Synopsis

In the fall of 1989, Jonny Langley, a hunter from Owlsbourne, Connecticut, vanished without a trace. Three days later, he returned, disoriented and with no memory of what had happened to him.

No one suspected that Jonny’s disappearance would be connected to the bodies discovered more than three decades later.

In 2024, burned out artist Kay McQuinn returns to her decaying hometown. Owlsbourne is a shell of what it once was, its spirit gutted by the rise of BlackHole Pharmaceuticals, a corporation whose reach seems endless. With her life in freefall, Kay finds comfort in the woods and the McQuinn family tradition of bowhunting.

But one cold November morning, something finds her.

Earlier this year, @cult.class approached me with an exciting opportunity to help produce an audiobook for her new novel. Once we got @melissamedinavo and @kevindhartnell on board, I knew we had the team to make Caitlyn’s pulse pounding story leap off the page. ONE RED ARROW, a thrilling supernatural adventure, is now live on Audible. Just listen to the preview and you will be hooked. Support this independent artist and writer.

From the Author

…I recently wrote my debut novel, One Red Arrow, Part I. It is a supernatural thriller and creature feature with a female lead. Every piece of art that I make carries a piece of me, and this book is no exception. It took three years to write.

The self promotion can feel tiring, although I believe in this story, and as an independent author and publisher sharing it myself is the way to bring it to readers. Every order matters and helps visibility. The novel is available anywhere you buy books online, and the full cinematic audiobook is on Audible…

Murkvael – The Ruins of Korraveth: Dark Ambient Music for D&D

The Ruins of Korraveth by Murkvael - cover art

Murkvael: “The Ruins of Korraveth”

Kevin Hartnell introduces Murkvael, a new dark ambient project rooted in ritual drone and medieval sonic textures. The debut single, “The Ruins of Korraveth,” is a slow descent into a vast ruined city swallowed by darkness and memory.

Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, this track was composed specifically for use in tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, yet it stands on its own as a meditative exploration of decay. It evokes the slow rot of time, where melody yields to mood, and rhythm dissolves into ruin.

Designed for the Tabletop

“The Ruins of Korraveth” serves as a brooding backdrop for cursed ruins, ancient temples, or grim exploration scenes. It is designed to be loopable and unobtrusive, perfect for Game Masters looking to enhance immersion without distracting players from the narrative.

Ideal applications include:

  • Dungeon exploration scenes
  • Grimdark or horror campaigns
  • Solo journaling RPGs
  • Long-form ambient playlists

(Note: This track is free to use in private game sessions. For commercial streams, please provide a link back to this page.)

About Murkvael

Murkvael is the sound of forgotten crypts echoing with ancient hymns. Conjured from a background in horror scoring and narrative audio, this project crafts immersive atmospheres for cursed lands and lost realms beneath the earth. Each composition serves as an aural reliquary: dust-covered, blood-marked, and steeped in occult resonance.

Alien Exchange Student: Original Soundtrack by Kevin Hartnell

Kevin Hartnell - Alien Exchange Student cover art animated

Back in 2020, the popular kids’ podcast Kidpod Theater released a fun, genre-bending series titled Alien Exchange Student. I had the absolute pleasure of composing the original score for the show, and I am thrilled to announce that the full soundtrack is now available for streaming and download.

A Multi-Genre Challenge

Scoring Alien Exchange Student was a wonderful creative challenge because it required such a diverse palette of sounds. Unlike my usual work in darkwave or horror, this project needed to be lighthearted yet musically sophisticated. The brief called for a wide array of styles, pushing me to explore genres I do not typically touch.

The soundtrack features everything from retro 1960s spy themes (think James Bond meets The Pink Panther) to upbeat synthwave tracks. There are also 80s pop-style pastiches, dark ambient themes for “industrial espionage” scenes, and late 70s funk detective cues. The goal was to create a cohesive sonic world that was exciting for kids but musically rich enough for the parents listening along.

Composer’s Note

Writing for a younger audience is a unique discipline. The melodies need to be immediate and memorable, and the emotional beats need to be clear without being overly complex. It was great fun to stretch these musical muscles and pay homage to so many classic film and TV tropes within a single project.

The Sounds Of Nightmares 8: Music Composed For Campfire Radio Theater

Kevin Hartnell presents “The Sounds of Nightmares 8,” featuring 39 tracks of original music composed for the horror anthology podcast Campfire Radio Theater. This volume marks a significant milestone in an ongoing musical journey, compiling a year’s worth of horror cues.

This collection features scores from three distinct tales: “West Palm Readers,” “The Heretic’s Handbook,” and “Final Resting Place.” Unlike scoring a single film with a consistent palette, working with Campfire Radio Theater requires a chameleon-like approach, pivoting from organic acoustic dread to 80s-inspired synth textures.

The Sounds of Nightmares 8: what this volume covers

This release highlights the versatility required for anthology storytelling. “West Palm Readers” sets a tense, urban stage for a tarot reading gone wrong, while “The Heretic’s Handbook” descends into the folk-horror of a pagan woodland retreat. Finally, “Final Resting Place” unearths subterranean dread in a summer cemetery, blending seismic rumblings with supernatural threats.

Below, you can play the episodes directly on the page. If you prefer to jump straight to listening to the scores, use the Spotify and Bandcamp embeds at the bottom. Bandcamp is also the best option if you want to support the work directly.

West Palm Readers

In the bustling heart of Times Square, a street-savy couple running a tarot and palm reading storefront plot one final big score… but their scheme takes a terrifying turn when a new client steps into the shop.

The Heretic’s Handbook

A romantic woodland retreat spirals into a terrifying ordeal as newlyweds Trent and Mia fall prey to a pagan religious order.

Final Resting Place

In the summer of 93, a cemetery caretaker and his grandson discover a series of ominous rumblings under the earth that may originate from something far more disturbing than seismic activity.

The Sounds Of Nightmares 4: Music Composed For Campfire Radio Theater

Kevin Hartnell presents “The Sounds of Nightmares 4,” a collection of 31 tracks of fiendish audio composed for the horror anthology podcast Campfire Radio Theater.

This volume focuses heavily on two standout stories: “The Thing on the Ground Floor” and “Gerald.” Whether you are a fan of horror scores, dark ambient soundscapes, or 80s-inspired synth music, there is plenty here to scratch that itch.

Have a listen, in the dark, preferably with headphones.

The Thing on the Ground Floor

This two-part episode required a unique sonic approach. Creator John Ballentine requested a theme song for a fictional “Cops”-style television series referenced in the story. It had to evoke the energy of the famous “Bad Boys” theme while standing on its own. The result was the track “Busted,” a fun diversion from the otherwise dark and tense score.

Gerald

Originally written by Bill Gray for the CBC’s Nightfall anthology series, this story is set in 1983. Having grown up in the 80s with a love for analog synthesis, this score was something I could really sink my teeth into. The music leans heavily into the era, utilizing vintage synth textures to build a creeping sense of dread.

This collection features scores from four distinct tales: “Woods Ferry,” “Rites of Autumn,” “Abduction At Willow Woods,” and “Ravenous.” My connection with Campfire Radio Theater has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. The Sounds of Nightmares 2: what this volume covers

This volume represents a deeper collaboration with the show’s creator, John Scott Ballentine. In addition to composing the score, I took on full production duties for the episode “Ravenous,” which offered a unique opportunity to shape the sound design alongside the music. Whether it’s the Halloween nostalgia of “Rites of Autumn” or the sci-fi intensity of “Abduction at Willow Woods,” each score in this set was built to enhance the specific tension of the script.

Below, you can play the episodes directly on the page. If you prefer to jump straight to listening to the scores, use the Spotify and Bandcamp embeds at the bottom. Bandcamp is also the best option if you want to support the work directly.

Woods Ferry

Weekend explorers on a quest for antique treasures stumble upon a lost town at the end of a long dirt road and soon uncover the unspeakable truth behind the decades past evacuation of Woods Ferry.

Rites of Autumn

A young boy spends an autumn afternoon with his grandpa who passes on a few very unique Halloween traditions.

Abduction at Willow Woods

The Origin of Overlook Hotel Records: A History (1999–2014)

The Origin and History of Overlook Hotel Records

Back in 1999, I released a collection of recordings from my archives called “Room 237 (R237-001)” which became the very first release on Overlook Hotel Records. It is a small collection of early electronic compositions with one track featuring Todd Gerber (Dinah Shore Jr./Umlaut). Hardly any copies exist (they were made to give out to friends), but you may still be able to locate one at the main library branch in Cincinnati.

I also recorded a collection of songs called La Notte – “La Notte Dei Cavalieri” (R237-002) with my friend Paul Ash (Unto Ashes, Night Gallery). For this release, we burned all of the CDs, printed the artwork, and also did our own cassette duplication. Despite being a complete DIY project recorded with two microphones in a small room, the recording did well and feedback was very positive. There are probably still quite a few old copies of La Notte floating around the planet. These recordings mark the beginning of Overlook Hotel Records.

Shortly after these were released, I began working on the dark ambient Umbra project (R237-004). It was released on Overlook Hotel Records as well as mp3.com before it was purchased by Vivendi Universal. I recently reissued it on Bandcamp along with “Umbra: The Dusk Single” (R237-003) which features percussion-backed electronic music. Music from the Umbra release was licensed to use in a film called “Jigsaw” in 2002 and has turned up in some strange places all over the internet and elsewhere.

Dusk cover art cd
Umbra cover art cd

Over the next seven years, I spent time playing a lot of gigs, working on the road, working/recording with various bands, and writing my own music sporadically. It wasn’t until 2006 that I released anything of my own. Back in 1995 I had begun playing and studying various percussion instruments, so the next release came in the form of an experiment in home-recording of the aforementioned drums. The Black Drum – “Rakshasa” (R237-005) was released on August 11, 2006.

While the results of the recording were not very good, many mistakes were made which proved to be quite educational. I learned that I should focus on what I do best and what I love to do the most—and this project was about as far from that as I could get. Tracks were used for live performances by dance troupes, instructional videos, a documentary, and YouTube videos. After a couple of pressings, the project was pulled out of circulation and remains out of print.

The Black Drum cover art cd

During this time and over the course of the next 4-5 years, I continued working on the road while performing and recording with other bands. I needed a major change. This inadvertently came about in 2008 when I became seriously ill… at the same time that my wife was pregnant… on her birthday (drummers – it’s all in the timing, right?).

These life-changing events worked as a catalyst to kick me into overdrive in regards to working on my own music. This also included studying production, music composition, audio engineering, and working on music with like-minded musicians. From 2010-2013, a huge amount of material was written and recorded. The first project out of the gate was Cambium – “Let’s Send A Signal” (R237-006). With a blend of rock, post-punk, dark-wave, and indie rock influences, Cambium’s “Let’s Send A Signal” is a very diverse collection of songs.

Cambium cover art cd

Cambium was released on April 22, 2013 through Bandcamp and marked the beginning of a new era for Overlook Hotel Records now no longer limited to solo works. Around this time, I also organized and produced an independent collection of original songs created as a tribute to Gary Numan called “The Replicon Project.” Some of the artists involved with Cambium also appeared on the tribute.

The next release from Overlook Hotel Records came in the form of an EP of music by Toxic Web, a mix of electronic rock, darkwave, and dark ambient influences.

Toxic Web cover art cd

The Toxic Web – “I” EP (R237-007) was released on Bandcamp on October 4, 2013. Deanna Quijada, who I consider the undocumented love-child of Kate Bush, Yma Sumac, and Nina Hagen, is featured on some stunning vocal work. As much as I love the title track, I feel that her vocal performance on “My Hands Are Blue” is absolutely fiendish and beautiful. Jason Whitcomb is responsible for the majority of the synth wizardry heard on this 4-track EP as well as sharing vocal and songwriting duties.

The latest release from Overlook Hotel Records is the self-titled Trinity & Triage (R237-008). Released on January 1, 2014, it is a female-fronted, progressive-folk meets psychedelic indie rock project revisiting the 70s sound unlike anything else you have ever heard.

Trinity & Triage cover art cd

Trinity & Triage contains a very interesting assemblage of instruments used to create the unique sound on this collection of recordings. Traditional instrumentation such as acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, drum kit, B3, and vocals are combined with Mellotron, clavichord, harmonium, sitar, and a colorful assortment of percussion instruments. “All At Sea” is a good example of many of the aforementioned items.

Upcoming releases on the way…

Rodin Coil is the working title name of a solo project I have been working on for some time now. Songs are in various stages of development and slowly making progress in between juggling production duties for various other projects.

Sinistrad is a dark ambient/post-industrial project with Jason Whitcomb currently in the writing process. Expect music that should only be played in the dark.
