Plastic Horizon invites listeners to slow down and look upward with the release of the new single, Meridian Drift. Moving away from high-octane beats, this track leans heavily into a slower, dreamy synthwave atmosphere, offering a sonic escape for those seeking reflection.

A Journey Into Dreamwave

Meridian Drift is a journey into mood. It features shimmering textures and lush, reverb-heavy pads that evoke the feeling of a late-night drive under a canopy of stars. The production focuses on space and depth, allowing the listener to drift along with the melody rather than being pushed by it.

This release captures the essence of the “chillwave” and “dreamwave” sub-genres, prioritizing emotion and atmosphere over aggression. It is a track designed to transport you toward an ocean of stars and the limitless horizons beyond.

Rainswept Skyline: New Synthwave Single by Plastic Horizon

Plastic Horizon invites you to take a walk through a digital city with the release of the new single, Rainswept Skyline. This track leans heavily into a late-night, reflective synthwave atmosphere, combining lush, layered pads with a steady, driving groove that feels like a lonely drive down a neon-lit highway.

From High-Fidelity to 8-Bit Dreams

The defining moment of Rainswept Skyline comes in its final minute. As the main melody fades, the track undergoes a unique sonic transformation. The high-fidelity production slowly dissolves, degrading bit by bit until the listener is left in a completely different world.

This closing section features an 8-bit-inspired fade that shifts the mood entirely toward a retro-digital space. It creates a dreamlike effect, pulling the listener into a pixelated world where it is raining in a city at night, a perfect sonic representation of 1990s video game nostalgia meeting modern synthwave production.

Mirage: New Cinematic Dreamwave from Plastic Horizon

Plastic Horizon slows the tempo and deepens the mood with “Mirage,” a short but evocative track that drifts into the territory of dreamwave and chill synthpop.

A Melancholic Waltz

“Mirage” stands out immediately due to its time signature. Written in 12/8 time, the track has a swaying, waltz-like feel that separates it from the driving 4/4 beats of typical synthwave. This rhythmic choice, combined with lush pads and a gentle melody, creates a distinctively melancholic vibe, like a memory fading in the heat.

From the Score of “Gerald”

This composition has dramatic roots. It was originally composed as a theme for the Campfire Radio Theater episode “Gerald,” serving as part of a larger score featuring around 30 pieces of music. While it works perfectly as a standalone single for late-night listening, its cinematic origins are clear in the way it builds atmosphere and emotion in a short runtime.

Plastic Horizon – Memory Waves: Melancholic Synthwave Ballad

Memory Waves by Plastic Horizon - single cover art

Plastic Horizon: “Memory Waves”

Kevin Hartnell presents “Memory Waves,” the most popular track from the self-titled Plastic Horizon album. Recorded between May 2020 and June 2020, this slower-paced synthwave ballad captures a specific, melancholy vibe, a strong sense of nostalgia for growing up in a small town in the 1980s.

“Recently, my daughter was describing how she felt a wave of great memories flooding her mind. It was a bittersweet observation from the point of a child in the middle of a pandemic, closed schools, and being isolated from her friends. It inspired me to create this track and recall quite a few great memories of my own. Writing this track was an emotional journey for me, and I hope it is for you as well.”

Insights

“Memory Waves” functions less as a retro pastiche and more as an emotional recollection filtered through synthwave aesthetics. Rather than leaning on overt genre signifiers like aggressive arpeggiators, the track adopts restraint and patience. The title is well chosen; the music unfolds in gentle swells rather than linear development, mirroring how memories surface unpredictably and recede just as quietly.

The melancholy here is subdued and sincere. It suggests quiet streets, late evenings, and small-town stillness rather than neon skylines. Sustained synth pads and gently voiced melodic elements carry the emotional weight, creating a polished piece of “Dreamwave” that feels personal and introspective.
