Nothing Inside: New Single by Kevin Hartnell Feat. Timothy Reid

Nothing Inside single cover art by Kevin Hartnell

Continuing the ongoing archive series, I am excited to share a track that originated back in January of 2020. Titled Nothing Inside, this single explores the intersection of rock instrumentation and electronic production, resulting in one of the more dynamic entries in my catalog.

Featuring Timothy Reid

A major highlight of this release is the contribution from collaborator Timothy Reid. His guitar solo on this track is a resonant display of technical brilliance and emotional depth. It captures a specific, soaring quality that lifts the song’s energy in the bridge. For those familiar with his work, it is exactly the kind of melodic phrasing you have come to expect from such a talented musician.

Themes of De-Evolution

Lyrically and thematically, the song is inspired by the paradox of the modern age: the rapid advances in technology contrasted with what feels like a cultural regression. It asks the question of whether we are moving forward or sliding backward.

Perhaps the band DEVO was right all along about the concept of “de-evolution.” Nothing Inside is a sonic reflection on that idea, a critique of the emptiness that can hide behind a shiny, high-tech veneer.

Cover art for In Answer to 'A' and Boiling Point by Kevin Hartnell

From the Archives: New Singles “In Answer to ‘A'” & “Boiling Point”

Kevin Hartnell - Boiling Point cover art animated

For Kevin Hartnell, the creative process has always involved a “vault,” a large backlog of music sitting in the archives, waiting for the right moment to surface. For any music producer who has been working for decades, this is a common reality.

In an effort to finally let these tracks see the light of day, I am actively working on releasing various new singles from different eras of my production history. Today, I am proud to present two distinct tracks that highlight very different sides of my catalog: “In Answer to ‘A'” and “Boiling Point.”

Kevin Hartnell on “In Answer to ‘A'”

“In Answer to ‘A'” has a long and winding history that spans nearly a quarter of a century. The original musical concept was written all the way back around 1999.

It was a time of experimentation, and while the core idea was strong, I was never quite satisfied with the initial interpretation. I felt limited by the technology I had at the time, and the sound in my head didn’t quite match what was coming out of the speakers.

In 2011, I revisited the composition. Armed with better tools and more experience, I created this specific version. It captures the mood I was originally aiming for, a blend of melodic introspection and structural complexity. However, despite being “finished” in 2011, it sat in limbo for another decade.

It was reviewed in 2021, abandoned yet again, until finally, this year, I decided it was time to bring it to the surface. Listening to it now, it serves as a time capsule. It bridges the gap between my early songwriting instincts and the modern production style that Kevin Hartnell listeners recognize today.

The Heat of “Boiling Point”

In stark contrast to the decades-long journey of the first track, “Boiling Point” is a much more recent creation. Originally produced in August of 2022, this track explores a more immediate, aggressive energy.

It was created during a burst of productivity but sat on the shelf for a short while as I focused on various other projects and label duties. The title “Boiling Point” reflects the tension within the track. It features driving rhythms and a sense of urgency that differs significantly from my older work.

Releasing it alongside an older track provides a fascinating look at the evolution of my sound. Where “In Answer to ‘A'” is calculated and evolved over years, “Boiling Point” is a snapshot of a specific, high-energy moment in the studio.

The Studio Workflow

Releasing archival music is an interesting challenge for any artist. There is always the temptation to “fix” old mixes or update sounds to modern standards. You often ask yourself if you should re-record the drums or update the synths.

However, with these Kevin Hartnell releases, the goal is to preserve the integrity of the time in which they were made. By clearing out the backlog, it clears mental space for future projects while allowing listeners to fill in the gaps of the artist’s discography. It is about honoring the past while clearing the path for the future.

Il Ritorno Dei Morti: New 70s Italian Horror Prog from Alchimia Sonora

Alchimia Sonora - Il Ritorno Dei Morti cover art

The latest single from Alchimia Sonora has arrived, titled “Il Ritorno Dei Morti” (The Return of the Dead). This project is a dedicated homage to a very specific and influential era of cinema: the Italian horror films of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

If you are looking for late-night listening pleasure, crank up the volume on your Walkman and enjoy a midnight stroll through the mausoleum with this track.

A Tribute to Italian Horror

“Il Ritorno Dei Morti” draws directly from the intersection of progressive rock and 1970s Italian horror cinema. Listeners familiar with the genre will immediately recognize the DNA of legendary artists like Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, and Libra. However, Alchimia Sonora avoids simple imitation; instead, the project channels these influences into a sound that feels both authentic to the era and refreshingly modern.

The track features a raw, 1970s prog-rock style characterized by aggressive drums, driving guitars, and plenty of retro-styled keys. It balances the grit of a live rock band with the calculated tension of a film score.

Atmosphere Over Structure

Unlike a standard rock song, “Il Ritorno Dei Morti” favors atmosphere, repetition, and gradual development over conventional verse-chorus structure. It aligns more closely with film scoring than standalone composition.

Analog synthesizers and organ textures are used to establish a sense of unease. The rhythmic foundation maintains a steady, almost ritualistic pulse that drives the track forward without rushing. Themes emerge slowly, repeat, and evolve, reinforcing a sense of inevitability, much like a killer stalking their prey in a Giallo film.

Mood and Suggestion

Rather than relying on overt shock or bombast, the track works through mood and suggestion. The arrangement leaves ample space for dissonance and restraint, allowing the music to feel ominous without becoming cluttered.

This is music designed to evoke imagery. It functions equally well as a standalone listening experience or as an imagined soundtrack cue for a scene that never existed. It is rooted in classic prog sensibilities and the shadowed aesthetics of European horror.

Words to the Wise: Debut Album from Imperial Measures

Cover art for Words to the Wise by Imperial Measures

Imperial Measures has officially arrived with their debut album, “Words to the Wise.” Spearheaded by the prolific composer Peter Rand and featuring the evocative vocals of Stefanie Kisamore, this project is a rich tapestry of progressive rock and pop sensibilities.

A New Musical Chapter

I am proud to have been a part of this collection, providing drums, percussion, keys, guitars, and handling the arrangement, production, and mixing. The result is an album that critics are already calling “gorgeous” and “absorbing.”

As Rob Fisher notes in his review: “The opening title track is a brilliant introduction to their musical world-building… It’s not until well over a minute into the song that the vocal is finally unleashed into a wonderfully soaring crescendo, full of power and life.”

Lyrics (Title Track)

Sun breaks through
Morning light
Bedside clock tells time
Eyes stay shut
Sleep holds back each rhyme

Songs that whisper
Through the night
Disappear
Disappear
Lines that told
The story right
Disappear
Disappear

All just words to the wise
Keep this sleep from my eyes
All just words to the wise
Keep this sleep from my eyes

Another me
Another world
Finds the words to say
Another me
Another world
Lives another day

All just words to the wise
Keep this sleep from my eyes
All just words to the wise
Keep this sleep from my eyes

Cover art for Decade in Despair by Plassgard

Decade in Despair: Progressive Rock Anthology from Plassgard

Plassgard unleashes a massive musical anthology with “Decade in Despair,” a collection of recordings that spans ten years of creative evolution.

A Ten-Year Journey

Written entirely by Anders Plassgard, this album is a testament to perseverance and artistic vision. It weaves together a tapestry of genres, blending the complexity of progressive rock with the raw energy of NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and classic rock.

The core trio of the band, Anders Plassgard (vocals, keys), Kevin Hartnell (drums, bass, keys), and Mat Williams (guitars), delivers a sound that is both nostalgic and thoroughly modern.

Ballet of the Mechanical Doll

A standout moment on the album is the track “Ballet of the Mechanical Doll.” Featuring guest bassist Bjorn Pehrson, this six-minute epic serves as a showcase for the band’s technical prowess.

Listeners should pay special attention to the guitar work of Mat Williams here; his performance is absolutely phenomenal, driving the track with intricate leads and heavy rhythms that define the album’s sound.

Saltanath - 888 by Antoni Tashev

Saltanath – 888: Progressive Rock & Guitar Virtuosity from London

Saltanath - 888 by Antoni Tashev

Saltanath: Progressive Folk & Guitar Virtuosity

We are thrilled to announce the release of “888” by Saltanath. This 8-track instrumental album is the brainchild of Antoni Tashev, a guitar virtuoso originally from Bulgaria and now based in London.

Drawing from classical training and a deep respect for his heritage, Tashev weaves complex “Math Rock” time signatures with the soulful melodies of Bulgarian folklore. The result is a sound that is technical yet deeply emotional, a true journey for fans of progressive rock and instrumental storytelling.

Track Highlight: “Spiritual Slumber”

A standout moment on the record is track 4, “Spiritual Slumber.” It perfectly encapsulates the project’s fusion of styles—balancing intricate, clean electric guitar work with driving percussion. It moves with a restless energy that defies its title, showcasing Tashev’s ability to make complex arrangements feel accessible and melodic.

Trinity & Triage Release New Track: “Tilting”

Tilting by Trinity & Triage - cover art

Trinity & Triage Release New Track: “Tilting”

Trinity & Triage have released a new track today called “Tilting.”

A melancholy ballad blending elements of psychedelic, folk, and progressive rock, the track strips away percussion entirely to rely on atmospheric textures and songwriting. This sound perfectly encapsulates the various changes going on in the lives of the band members.

In particular, Ralph Feetham recently survived a severe fire in his home that damaged the second floor. Fortunately, everyone is fine. The same cannot be said about some of the guitars. Ralph is busy trying to get things back in order and we wish him and his family all the best during the turmoil created by this horrific life event.

There are quite a few songs started by the prolific Mr. Feetham waiting for work to be done. It’s a matter of time (and lots of money) at this point.

About Trinity & Triage

Born from the songwriting of Ralph Feetham, then later joined by Deanna Quijada and Kevin Hartnell, Trinity & Triage began working on their first demo together (“Scorn”) back in 2011. The project encapsulates a blend of progressive, psychedelic, indie, folk, world, and retro rock sounds.

Trinity & Triage is:
Deanna Quijada · Vocals
Ralph Feetham · Guitars
Kevin Hartnell · Synths

The Antoni Tashev Project: 6 Tracks of Guitar Magic

The Antoni Tashev Project: 6 Tracks of Guitar Magic

Overlook Hotel Records is proud to announce the release of catalog item R237-011: The Antoni Tashev Project. This release represents a significant milestone for the label and the artist.

When I first started working on The Antoni Tashev Project, Antoni was just sixteen, yet he played with a maturity way beyond his years. He began playing guitar at a very young age, and his dedication is audible in every track. Studying classical guitar, folkloric/traditional music, and 70s rock truly inspired this incredibly talented guitarist to create his very own brand of music.

I am honored to be a part of this album, contributing drums, percussion, and keys, and I hope you will enjoy the music as much as I have.

About The Antoni Tashev Project

You will hear some unique guitar work accented by wild bends, vibrato, and a strong ear for melody and harmony. Don’t let the fact that it is a collection of instrumental songs convince you that it’s a guitar solo-riddled shredfest. In fact, quite the contrary.

Antoni focuses on melody and the interplay of the instrumentation. When I was his age, I was playing in a cover band and completely clueless without having written anything worth listening to, so hearing what he has accomplished already shows me just how much time I have wasted. It also inspires me to work harder and to keep hammering away at creating music because I love it.

Antoni told me how he was inspired by legendary guitarists like Peter Green and Jimmy Page. While you may hear hints of these artists in his work, he is a complete original.
